Miedema Dairy
Circleville, OH
ECC is pleased to feature Miedema Dairy in Circleville, Ohio as the first Lagoon Cover Program project to be constructed in the state. The project encompasses a complete lagoon cover anaerobic digester over the farm's manure storage lagoon, as well as an incorporated sludge removal system. Methane biogas is captured under the partial lagoon cover, measured with a flow meter, and then combusted. The measured greenhouse gas emissions reductions will be verified and registered annually as carbon credits with the Chicago Climate Exchange.
Andy and Itske Miedema built their dairy in 2002; since the farm's completion the pair has worked extensively with the Ohio State University Extension to further agricultural education in the region. The lagoon cover digester system at Miedema Dairy offers an opportunity to showcase the Miedemas' progressive approach to dairy farming. Andy Miedema reflected on the project, "Our experience with ECC has been great. We had no contract issues, and the engineering process has been efficient and not invasive to our everyday farm activities." According to Miedema, several neighboring community members have already commented that they're excited to see innovative environmental measures being put into place at Miedema Dairy.
